Eating Out

Jeonju is the best city in Korea for food, and it is not close. The city claims birthplace status for bibimbap, and the local version — served in a heated stone bowl (dolsot) with locally grown vegetables, gochujang, and a raw egg that cooks against the hot stone — is the reference standard by which all others are judged. Beyond bibimbap, the city is known for kongnamul gukbap (soybean sprout soup), jajangmyeon made with locally grown black beans, and a rich tradition of banchan (side dishes) that accompanies every meal.

The Hanok Village is the centre of gravity for restaurants. The streets around Gyeonggijeon are lined with places serving bibimbap; the alleys off the main drag are better. For a proper meal in a converted hanok, book ahead.
