Dongseongno (동성로) is Daegu's main pedestrian street, a broad promenade in the heart of the city lined with cafes, clothing shops, street food stalls, and the occasional large entertainment complex. It is the social centre of the city, particularly busy in the evenings and on weekends when the population seems to double. The street has a young energy — Daegu has several universities and a large student population.
The surrounding neighbourhood has the best concentration of cafes and restaurants in the city, spread through side streets and alleys that run parallel to the main strip. Korean barbecue places, Japanese ramen bars, and bubble tea shops occupy virtually every corner. The area around Banwoldang station, at the south end of Dongseongno, has a denser and slightly older character with more traditional restaurants and pojangmacha street stalls.
The street is also the venue for the annual Dongseongno Festival in autumn, when it closes to traffic and fills with performances, food stalls, and large crowds.
