Muju sits in the Sobaek Mountains of central South Korea, far enough from the big cities to feel like a real mountain break. It is best known for Deogyusan National Park, winter skiing, taekwondo, and a firefly festival that turns its clean rivers and fields into a point of local pride.
The strongest anchor is Deogyusan National Park, where trails and a resort gondola reach high ridges that are especially beautiful under winter frost. Taekwondowon gives Muju a second identity: a national campus for Korea's best-known martial art, with demonstrations, training spaces, and a museum-like visitor experience.
Muju is not just a ski-resort appendage. The Gucheon-dong valley, Jeoksangsan, Bandi Land, and the annual firefly festival all point to the same thing: a county selling clean mountain air, streams, and outdoor culture. It is worth a day or two if you are travelling between Jeonju, Daejeon, and the interior mountains.
