The largest and most striking of Negombo's Catholic churches, St. Mary's stands at the centre of the old town and reflects the deep Portuguese influence on this stretch of coast. The interior is painted with vivid biblical scenes — the ceiling in particular is worth stopping to look at. Mass is still well-attended; if you arrive on a Sunday morning, the church is full and the atmosphere is genuine.
