Keelung Mountain (Jilong Shan)

The volcanic cone above Jiufen offering panoramic views of the northeast coast

Jilong Shan (Keelung Mountain) is the conspicuous volcanic peak that rises behind Jiufen and Jinguashi, visible from the coast road for kilometres in both directions. The hiking trail to the summit takes about 30 minutes from the base and involves rope-assisted scrambling on the final section. The summit, at 588 metres, gives a 360-degree view: Jiufen and the northeast coast below, the Taipei basin visible on clear days to the west, and on exceptional days, the northern tip of Taiwan and the East China Sea to the north.

The trailhead is accessible by local bus from Jiufen or by a 20-minute walk from the Gold Museum in Jinguashi. The climb is steeper than it looks from below and requires sensible shoes. The summit is frequently in cloud; morning is generally clearer than afternoon. The combination of Gold Museum, Keelung Mountain summit, and a return through Jiufen old street makes a full day's itinerary.
