Taiyangbing — sun cake — is Taichung's signature pastry: a flaky round disc the size of a hand, filled with malt sugar and a touch of cream. It was invented in the 1950s on Ziyou Road in the central district, and the original Yi Chung Sun Cake (Yi Chung Taiyangbing Lao Dian) and Tai Yang Tang are both still in business on the same street.
It is the standard Taichung souvenir to take home. The shops on Ziyou Road sell single boxes for around three hundred New Taiwan dollars (about ten euros), and most will pack for travel. Eat them within a week.
