Things to Do

Taichung's highlights are spread across the city rather than clustered in a historic centre. The Toyo Ito-designed National Taichung Theater is the most arresting piece of contemporary architecture in Taiwan and worth the trip even if you don't catch a performance. The National Museum of Natural Science is a strong all-rounder and popular with families. The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, in a green district south of the centre, holds Taiwan's biggest collection of modern and contemporary Taiwanese art. And the Rainbow Village, in the western suburbs, is a single block of old army housing painted top to bottom in folk-art murals by a single elderly resident — it began as an eccentric's protest against demolition and ended as one of the city's most photographed spots.
