When to Go

Taichung has the kindest year-round climate of Taiwan's major cities. Spring (March to May) is warm, mostly dry, and the most pleasant overall. Autumn (October to November) is similar.

Summer (June to September) is hot and humid, with afternoon thundershowers; the city is fine to visit but the mountains east of it are more comfortable for day trips. Typhoon season runs from July to October, with the central west coast generally less affected than the east or south.

Winter is mild — daytime temperatures around fifteen to twenty degrees — and dry. The mountains can drop near freezing, with very occasional snow at the higher altitudes. The Dajia Mazu pilgrimage in March or April and the Lantern Festival in February are the main local events to plan around.
