National Taichung Theater

The National Taichung Theater is a Toyo Ito building from 2016, set in the new Seventh Redevelopment district of north-west Taichung. It is one of the most striking pieces of contemporary architecture in Taiwan — a five-storey block whose walls curve continuously inwards and outwards, forming caves and chambers rather than rooms.

There are three auditoria inside: a 2,000-seat opera house, an 800-seat playhouse, and a 200-seat black box. The lobby, foyer, and rooftop garden can all be visited free during the day, and the building is genuinely worth a trip even if nothing is on. Free guided tours run several times a day in Mandarin and occasional English.

A story
The architect Toyo Ito called the building "the Sound Cave" — it is constructed without right angles, with curved concrete walls forming interlocking grottoes that double as performance spaces. It took over ten years to design and build and is considered one of the most technically difficult concrete structures ever completed.
