Rainbow Village

Vibrant folk-art murals by a retired soldier

A single city block of old military dependents' housing in the western suburbs, painted top to bottom in vivid folk-art murals by Huang Yung-fu — a retired Kuomintang soldier who picked up a paintbrush in his eighties to brighten his neighbourhood and, almost accidentally, saved it from demolition when the photographs went viral. Grandpa Rainbow, as he became known, passed away in 2024, but the village remains open and is one of the most photographed spots in the city. Small, free, and takes about twenty minutes to walk around. Combine with a visit to the nearby Fengjia Night Market in the evening.
