Khujand rewards a day or two of unhurried exploration. The old citadel, the spectacular bazaar, the Friday mosque, and several Soviet-era monuments form a compact centre that can be walked end to end in an afternoon. The surrounding Fergana Valley offers easy excursions to the Kayrakkum reservoir and the old Silk Road town of Penjikent.
