The Thailand–Burma Railway Centre is the most comprehensive museum in Kanchanaburi covering the history of the Death Railway. Opened in 2003, it was built as an educational counterpart to the war cemeteries and uses detailed maps, artefacts, photographs, and personal testimonies to explain both the military context — why Japan needed the railway — and the human cost of building it.
The exhibition is organised chronologically and covers the capture of Allied forces in Singapore and Southeast Asia, the camp system along the railway route, the experience of prisoners and Asian labourers, and the postwar reckoning. The quality of the research and presentation is unusually high for the region. It is the best single introduction to the subject and should be visited before or alongside the JEATH museum. Open daily 9am–5pm.
