Things to Do

Kanchanaburi's main draw is its World War II history, centred on the Death Railway and the Allied prisoners of war who built it. The war cemeteries, memorials and museums are among the most moving in Southeast Asia. Beyond the wartime sites, the town has several Buddhist temples worth visiting, including cave temples set in the limestone hills south of town. For context before visiting the cemeteries and bridge, start at the Thailand–Burma Railway Centre — the most thorough museum in town on the subject.
