Khao Chi Chan Buddha Mountain

About 15 km south of Jomtien, an enormous gold-leaf-inlaid Buddha looks out from a limestone cliff face. The figure — the largest Buddha image in Thailand — sits in the meditation pose and is visible for kilometres across the surrounding pineapple fields.

The site has a small park with carp ponds, a covered walkway lined with smaller Buddha images, and a viewing platform that gives the best straight-on view. Best in the late afternoon when the sun lights the gold leaf. No entrance fee, and it pairs naturally with a half-day drive through the surrounding countryside, taking in the Silverlake Vineyard and Wat Yansangwararam on the way back.

A story
Khao Chi Chan was carved in 1996 to mark the fiftieth year of King Bhumibol Adulyadej's reign. A meditating Buddha 109 metres tall was outlined on the cliff face by laser, then inlaid into the limestone with gold leaf. The cliff had previously been threatened by a quarry; the carving was, in effect, a way of saving the rock face by making it sacred.
