Wat Hua Wiang, on Phanit Wattana Road in the market area of Mae Hong Son, is notable for its brass Buddha image, Phra Chao Phara La Khaeng — a replica of a revered image in Myanmar. The Burmese-style seated figure has a distinctive narrow face and elongated features characteristic of Mandalay-period craftsmanship.
The temple is an active place of worship and is visited primarily by local people rather than tourists. It has a more lived-in, authentic feel than the more photogenic lake temples. Combined with the morning market on the same street, it makes for a good early-morning walk.
