Wat Jong Kham

Wat Jong Kham is a Shan-style temple beside the Nong Chong Kham lake in the centre of Mae Hong Son. The complex dates from the early 19th century and reflects the strong Burmese and Shan influence that distinguishes Mae Hong Son's temple architecture from the Lanna style found further east in Chiang Mai. The white chedis, stepped tiers, and gilded finials are Burmese in character.

The temple stands at the northern end of the lake compound alongside Wat Jong Klang. A colonial-style building within the complex houses a large seated Buddha. The lake itself is one of the most pleasant spaces in the town — benches, shade trees, and morning tai chi practitioners around the edges.

A story
The glittering golden chedi of Wat Jong Kham and its twin Wat Jong Klang are reflected in Nong Chong Kham Lake at dawn, making this the most photographed scene in Mae Hong Son. The reflection is best in the calm of early morning before the mist burns off — the image of white spires and golden chedis mirrored in still water against forested hills has appeared in thousands of travel photographs without ever losing its power.
