Huai Nam Dang National Park

Huai Nam Dang National Park lies about 50 kilometres northeast of Pai, straddling the border between Mae Hong Son and Chiang Mai provinces. It covers a mountainous area with peaks above 2,000 metres, and within its boundaries are the Tha Pai Hot Springs, several viewpoints, waterfalls, and the headwaters of several rivers. The park is among the better preserved forests in the region and is popular with Thai domestic tourists for its cool-season scenery.

The main draw from the Pai side is the mountain scenery and the sea-of-clouds phenomenon that occurs on clear mornings in the cool season. The viewpoints in the park require an early start — clouds form in the valleys overnight and often burn off by 9am. The drive from Pai is scenic but slow; a motorbike trip makes a full day. The entrance fee covers both the national park and the hot springs section.

A story
The park straddles the ridge between Mae Hong Son and Chiang Mai provinces at elevations above 2,000 metres. Its Doi Kiew Lom viewpoint offers what is regularly described as one of the best sea-of-clouds views in Thailand — on clear cool mornings between November and February, the valleys fill with white cloud while the peaks remain clear, creating a scene that looks more like the Himalayas than most of Thailand.
