Pai Canyon

Pai Canyon, known in Thai as Kong Lan, is a narrow sandstone formation about 8 kilometres south of town on Highway 1095. Erosion has carved a dramatic landscape of ridges, gullies, and steep drops, with viewpoints looking out over the surrounding valley and forested hills. The canyon is small — you can walk the main path in 20 minutes — but the views at sunset are genuinely striking.

The main activity is walking the narrow ridge trails at dusk. Several paths of varying exposure connect the car park to the viewpoints; some require careful footwork but no climbing ability. Come late afternoon for the golden light on the valley, then stay for sunset when the colours over the surrounding hills are at their best. Sunrise works equally well and draws far fewer people.

A story
Pai Canyon formed through centuries of erosion by wind and rain acting on a sandstone ridge, carving a series of narrow fins and gullies above the valley floor. The paths along the ridge — some barely half a metre wide with a steep drop on both sides — are walked without barriers or safety rails, and tourists have been injured in falls here more than once. The place remains unfenced and uncrowded outside sunset hours, which is precisely what makes it so unusual in modern Thailand.
