Amasya sits in a river gorge in northern Anatolia, which gives it a slightly different climate from the surrounding upland plateau. Spring and autumn are the best seasons: May and June bring green hillsides and mild temperatures; September and October offer clear skies and comfortable walking weather without the summer heat.
July and August can be warm and are the busiest months for Turkish domestic tourism. The town is not overwhelmed by visitors even at peak times, but early mornings are noticeably quieter. Winter is cold and the surrounding mountains can receive heavy snow, though the gorge itself is usually accessible. The rock tombs and castle are illuminated year-round, and the reflections in the river are striking on winter nights.
