Kaleiçi Bazaar and Shops

The lanes of Kaleiçi are lined with shops selling carpets, kilims, leather goods, ceramics, spices, and jewellery. The quality ranges from tourist tat to genuinely good handmade textiles and antiques. The carpet shops in particular have some fine pieces, and while the hard-sell culture of Istanbul's Grand Bazaar is largely absent here, you should still allow time to browse without pressure.

For spices, dried fruits, and nuts at better prices than the tourist shops, head to the weekly street market that sets up in Muratpaşa on Fridays — a genuine neighbourhood market where locals shop.
