When to Go

May, June and September are the best months. The weather is warm enough for the beach (25–30°C), the sea is swimmable, and the crowds are manageable. July and August are genuinely brutal — temperatures regularly exceed 35°C, the beaches are packed, prices peak, and the old town fills with tour groups.

Spring (April and early May) is excellent for the archaeological sites, when the vegetation is green and the heat is pleasant rather than oppressive. Winter is mild — frost is rare — but many resort hotels and beach facilities close from October to April. The city itself stays very much alive year-round, with its museum, restaurants, and cultural scene keeping going through the cooler months.
