Aydıncık

Small Cilician coast town near Gilindire Cave and the remains of ancient Kelenderis.

Aydıncık is a small town on Turkey's rougher, quieter Cilician coast, between Silifke and Anamur. The modern highway now slips past it, which leaves the harbour, beach, and old centre with a sleepy feel that suits the place.

The reason to stop is Gilindire Cave, a sea-facing cave with dripstone chambers and a mirror-like lake at the back. It is strong enough to make Aydıncık more than a road break. The town also sits on the site of ancient Kelenderis, once an important port, and small archaeological remains still surface around the harbour.

This is not a polished resort. Come for the cave, a walk along the water, and a glimpse of an old Mediterranean port that has almost disappeared into a working Turkish town.
