Darende is a small town in Malatya province, set where the Tohma River cuts through pale rock before joining the Euphrates system. It would be easy to pass by on the road across eastern Anatolia, but the town has a clear identity: water, cliffs, and the shrine of Somuncu Baba squeezed into the same narrow valley.
The main cluster is around Tohma Canyon and Somuncu Baba Complex. Footbridges, tea gardens, fish ponds, and mosque courtyards sit close together, so the experience is half nature walk and half pilgrimage stop. It is a very Turkish mix, and better than a standard roadside break.
Darende's other good reason to stop is water. Günpınar Waterfall drops in cool tiers outside town, while Kudret Havuzu uses spring-fed pools inside the canyon. Darende is selective rather than essential, but in a region with long drives, it has enough texture for a rewarding day.
