Bursa is the birthplace of the Iskender kebab, and no visit is complete without trying one. The original kebabçı is still run by the founding family near the Ulu Cami. The city also has excellent pide (Turkish flatbread), mantı (dumplings), and candied chestnuts — Uludag's chestnut forests have made Bursa the chestnut capital of Turkey.
For pide, head to the bakeries around the bazaar district or try Tarihi Cumhuriyet Pide Salonu. Bursa's chestnut desserts — candied whole chestnuts and chestnut cream — are sold in pastry shops throughout the centre; Divan Pastanesi on Atatürk Caddesi is a reliable option. For a fuller meal away from the tourist corridor, the Setbaşı area along the Gökdere stream has a string of cafes and restaurants popular with locals.
