Shopping in the Dalaman area ranges from traditional bazaars and weekly markets to small village shops. Prices are generally reasonable, and haggling is expected and enjoyed.
Markets
Weekly markets run in Koycegiz, Marmaris, Ortaca, and Fethiye. The Fethiye Tuesday market is the largest in the area — pungent spices, fresh produce, and the inevitable "designer" watches and clothing. You will often spot the same sellers at different markets. Sarigerme has a tourist-oriented market, but it is no cheaper than the village shops and the stallholders can be pushy. Locals avoid it. The Saturday market in Dalyan is worth a visit for both fresh produce and souvenirs.
Haggling
The Turkish love to haggle. Let the shopkeeper quote first, then negotiate in good spirits. Once you agree on a price, it is rude not to buy. In smaller shops, expect to be offered apple tea — accept it, it is part of the experience.
Carpets
Carpet weaving in Turkey dates back to around 7,000 BC. There are numerous carpet shops in the Dalaman region, and buying a handwoven Turkish carpet can be a memorable purchase if you know what you are looking for.
Practical Tips
Shops are generally open from 8am to 10pm, and even later in summer. Jewellery is a good buy in the larger shopping areas of Marmaris, though counterfeit watches and goods are everywhere. The Grand Bazaar at Dalaman Airport is convenient for last-minute gifts but extremely overpriced. Hotel shops are similarly inflated — buy in town instead.
Keep valuables secure at busy markets. Opportunistic theft is not common but not unheard of either.
