The Elazığ Archaeological Museum (Arkeoloji ve Etnografya Müzesi) is much better than a provincial city has any right to expect. The reason is the Keban Dam: when the reservoir flooded a huge area of the upper Euphrates in the 1970s, archaeologists raced to excavate as much as they could, and the finds — from Hittite, Urartian, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods — ended up here.
Highlights include Urartian bronzes, Hittite reliefs, and a striking collection of ancient seals. The ethnography section covers traditional kilims and silverwork from the region. An hour is enough.
