Harput is the main reason to visit the area — the ruined castle dates to the Urartian period, the Ulu Cami mosque is a fine example of Anatolian Seljuk architecture, and the village atmosphere is quiet and photogenic. The drive up from Elazığ takes about ten minutes and the views back across the plain are worth the trip alone. The Keban Dam lake makes for a striking landscape, and boat trips on the reservoir are possible. For wine enthusiasts, the Öküzgözü and Boğazkere grape varieties are indigenous to this region and form the backbone of some of Turkey's most respected red wines; local producers occasionally offer tastings.
