Butterfly Valley is a narrow, steep-sided canyon that opens onto a small beach on the coast between Fethiye and Ölüdeniz. The valley is named for the Jersey tiger moth — a striking orange-and-black species — which breeds here in large numbers, particularly in June and July. The beach itself is a beautiful crescent of sand and pebbles backed by towering cliffs.
Access is by boat only — regular water taxis run from Ölüdeniz. There is a rustic campsite at the back of the beach with basic bungalows and a restaurant, and some visitors stay overnight. The valley extends about 3.5 km inland and a trail follows the stream to a waterfall, though the path gets steep and slippery. For most visitors, a few hours on the beach and a swim in the clear water is enough.
