Hasankeyf

Relocated Tigris village where a drowned medieval town survives in fragments above the Ilısu reservoir.

Hasankeyf is not the place it used to be, and that is the point. The old Tigris-side settlement, inhabited for centuries and famous for caves, bridges, mosques, and cliff ruins, was largely flooded after the Ilısu Dam reservoir filled in 2020.

What remains is strange, sad, and still worth seeing if you are already moving between Batman, Midyat, and Mardin. A new village stands above the water, several monuments were moved into an archaeology park, and the Zeynel Bey Mausoleum has become the most visible survivor.

The citadel still rises from the south bank, with reservoir water now lapping below it. Hasankeyf is no longer an intact old town, but it is a powerful stop: part medieval Anatolia, part salvage operation, part warning label.
