Dikilitaş

Weathered 1st-century obelisk on a hilltop north of Iznik, commemorating Cassius Philiscus.

Dikilitaş is a 1st-century Roman obelisk on a hilltop north of Iznik. It stands about 12 metres high and carries an inscription for Cassius Philiscus, who is probably buried beneath it.

The monument is simple, weathered, and a little precarious, but the open setting makes it a good outer stop for travellers tracing Iznik's Roman remains beyond the walls.
