Lake Gate

Western gate of old Nicaea, opening toward the lake and the fragmentary remains of the Senate Palace.

Lake Gate, or Göl Kapı, is the western gate of old Nicaea. The lake has receded since antiquity, so the waterfront is now more modern, but the gate still anchors the old city's westward line.

Nearby are the rough remains of the Senate Palace, associated with the First Council of Nicaea. The foundations are not visually grand, but the setting makes the history easy to grasp.
