Green Mosque

Early Ottoman mosque with a turquoise-green tiled minaret, restored after wartime damage.

The Green Mosque, or Yeşil Camii, was built in the 1380s and is one of Iznik's finest Ottoman monuments. Its tiled minaret gives the mosque its name: green, turquoise, and blue surfaces rising above the quieter stonework below.

The building was damaged during the war of 1920 and restored in the 1960s. It is a good place to see how early Ottoman architecture in Iznik absorbed Byzantine surroundings while developing its own style.
