Istanbul Gate is the strongest surviving entrance in Iznik's old walls. It marks the northern approach to the ancient city and gives a clear sense of the scale of Nicaea's defences.
The walls once ran for about three kilometres around the town, with gates set toward the main roads. Istanbul Gate is the most rewarding of them because enough masonry survives to make the old city plan visible.
