The defining experience of this stretch of Turkish coast: a multi-day cruise on a traditional wooden gulet, sleeping on deck under the stars, swimming off the back of the boat in coves you cannot reach by road, and eating fresh fish at lunch in unspoiled bays. Standard routes from Marmaris run west along the Datça peninsula and into the Hisarönü gulf, or east towards Fethiye and the Twelve Islands.
Cruises run from a single day up to a full week. The shorter trips are good value and a fair introduction; the longer ones are the proper experience. Negotiate at the marina, book through a reputable agent, or — for a single day — just turn up at the harbour the night before.
