The İncekaya Aqueduct stands about five kilometres north of Safranbolu across a deep forested gorge, a stone span of 186 metres length and 67 metres height that carried water into the town from the 18th century until modern plumbing made it redundant. It is an impressive piece of engineering that most visitors to Safranbolu miss entirely, and the short drive or longer walk to reach it passes through attractive landscape.
The gorge below the aqueduct is the Tokatlı Canyon, a narrow ravine with a stream, popular with local hikers. A walking trail descends into the canyon and follows the stream, a pleasant contrast to the dust and stone of the old town. The aqueduct itself can be walked across (carefully — there are no railings) for vertiginous views down into the gorge. The combination of gorge walk and aqueduct visit makes a good half-day excursion from Safranbolu.
