Safranbolu is compact enough to cover on foot over a day or two, but rewards a slower approach. Start at the Cinci Han in the heart of the old bazaar — it has been the centre of commercial life here for 400 years — and work outward from there. The Cinci Hammam next door is the best place in town for a Turkish bath in an authentic setting. The İzzet Mehmet Pasha Mosque anchors the bazaar square. Walk up to the Kaymakamlar House museum for the best view of an Ottoman mansion interior. Climb Hidirlik Hill for the overview of the town. The İncekaya Aqueduct and Tokatlı Canyon, five kilometres out, are worth a half-day trip.
