The coastal road south from Tekirdağ through Şarköy and Mürefte is one of Turkey's most pleasant wine drives. The hills between the road and the sea are planted with vineyards producing Papazkarası, Yapıncak, and international varieties, and several small wineries have opened tasting rooms along the route. The scenery is excellent — Aegean light, terraced hillsides, the blue of Saros Bay opening up to the south.
Mürefte itself is a small town known for producing some of Turkey's best red wine; the local Papazkarası grape makes a tannic, deeply coloured wine unlike anything produced further north. The road is narrow and suited to cars rather than coaches. Allow a full day for a comfortable round trip from Tekirdağ with stops at two or three wineries.
