Food is the main reason people visit Tekirdağ. The city is famous across Turkey for two things: its köfte, and Tekirdağ Rakısı — the rakı distilled here that most connoisseurs consider Turkey's finest. On top of that, the surrounding countryside is wine country, and several waterfront restaurants specialise in the fish that come out of the Marmara. A meal here — local köfte, a carafe of local wine or a glass of Tekirdağ rakı, a spread of meze — is a genuine pleasure.
