Dubai Creek

The tidal inlet that founded Dubai, still busy with trading dhows

Dubai Creek (Khor Dubai) is the tidal inlet that gave rise to the city. For a century it was the commercial heart of the Gulf coast — a natural harbour busy with pearling boats, fishing dhows, and later the Indian and Iranian trading vessels that made Dubai a regional entrepôt before oil changed everything. The Creek still functions today: the dhow wharves along Baniyas Road in Deira remain active cargo terminals, with traditional wooden vessels loaded with car parts, electronics, and consumer goods destined for Iran, Pakistan, and the Swahili coast.

The best way to experience the Creek is by abra — the wooden water taxis that make the crossing between the Deira and Bur Dubai sides for 1 AED. You can also hire an abra for a longer Creek tour (agree on a price before boarding, typically 30–60 AED for 30–60 minutes). The evening light on the Creek, with the minarets and old merchant houses on one side and the modern skyline behind, is one of the city's genuinely beautiful views.
