Old Dubai's best-preserved district of coral-block houses and wind towers, now an arts quarter

Al Fahidi — also called Bastakiya — is the best-preserved quarter of old Dubai, a compact warren of coral-block houses, narrow lanes, and traditional wind towers (barjeel) dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Merchants from the Bastak district of Iran settled here after the tax-free trading concessions offered by the Maktoum family, and the neighbourhood takes its alternative name from their homeland.

Today the district has been restored and repurposed as an arts quarter: dozens of small galleries, cultural spaces, cafes, and the excellent Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding occupy the old courtyard houses. The Dubai Museum at Al Fahidi Fort anchors the southern end. It is quieter and more intimate than almost anywhere else in the city, and the wind towers — passive cooling devices that channel breezes down into the rooms below — are worth studying carefully. Allow a couple of hours to wander and explore.

story: > The wind towers of Bastakiya work without any moving parts: a rectangular shaft open on all four sides catches wind from any direction and funnels cool air down into the rooms below, while hot air naturally escapes upward through the courtyard. In a climate of 45°C summers, this centuries-old technology kept interiors 10–15°C cooler than outside — no electricity required.
