Jebel Hafit

Limestone mountain above Al Ain, reached by a steep hairpin road through the desert.

The country's second-highest peak, 1,249 metres above the desert outside Al Ain. The drive up is the attraction: a wide three-lane road that twists and climbs through dramatic limestone cliffs, with several lay-bys for photographs and a pair of restaurants near the summit.

Sunset is the right time to come up. The Mercure hotel near the top has a bar with the view. On a clear morning you can sometimes see the Gulf of Oman in the far distance.
