Al Hisn Fort

Al Hisn Fort stands at the heart of Sharjah's Heritage Area, a solid white watchtower and walled compound that was the original seat of the Qawasim rulers who have governed this part of the Gulf for centuries. The rebuilt structure houses a museum of local history covering Sharjah's role in the region's pearl-diving economy, its conflicts with the British in the 19th century, and its transformation into a modern emirate.

The fort is compact but well presented, with artefacts, photographs, and period reconstructions that give context to the remarkable rapidity of change in the Gulf. The surrounding area has been developed into a pedestrian heritage zone — small specialist museums, cafes in restored buildings, and the nearby Souq al-Arsah create one of the more pleasant urban walking experiences in the UAE. Come in the late afternoon when the heat is manageable and the fort is beautifully lit.

A story
Al Hisn Fort was built around 1820 as the seat of the Qawasim ruling family and served as the royal residence until the 1960s. It was demolished in 1969 during a development project and sat in ruins for decades before Sheikh Sultan ordered its reconstruction from historical photographs and oral accounts. The rebuilt fort opened as a museum in 1997 — a deliberate act of cultural recovery in a region where too many old buildings simply disappeared.
