Tomb of Thieu Tri

Understated Nguyen imperial tomb outside Hue, set in a quiet landscape of ponds and pines.

The Tomb of Thieu Tri is one of Hue's more restrained imperial tombs, built for the Nguyen emperor who ruled in the mid-nineteenth century. Compared with the grander, more visited tombs, its architecture feels quieter and more integrated into the surrounding ponds, fields, and pines.

That understatement is the reason to go. If you have time for more than the headline royal sites, Thieu Tri gives you a slower, less crowded version of the imperial tomb landscape and a better sense of how these monuments were meant to sit with nature.
