Al-Mahdi Abbas Mosque

An 18th-century mosque with one of the city's finest carved wooden ceilings

Built in 1727 by Imam al-Mahdi Abbas, this mosque stands within the old city and is admired for its woodwork — the interior ceiling is among the finest in Yemen, painted with intricate geometric patterns in the style typical of the country's Zaydi tradition. The two minarets are notably elegant, the proportions tighter than the larger Ottoman mosques nearby.

Like most working mosques in Sana'a, the interior is generally not open to non-Muslims, but the exterior and the courtyard are striking and the carved gypsum panelwork around the entry repays a slow look.
