The Chauvel is one of Sydney's best-loved independent cinemas, tucked into the upper floor of the grand Victorian Paddington Town Hall at Five Ways. Named for the pioneering Australian film-maker Charles Chauvel, it programmes arthouse releases, retrospectives, cult classics and festival seasons that the multiplexes never touch, in two atmospheric old rooms.
It is the kind of place locals are fiercely loyal to, and a screening pairs naturally with a drink in one of the pubs around the Five Ways junction. Check the programme for its regular themed and double-bill nights.
