The West MacDonnell Ranges stretching west of Alice Springs contain a string of gorges, waterholes, and ochre pits accessible on a half-day or full-day drive: Simpsons Gap (8 km), Standley Chasm (50 km), Ellery Creek Big Hole, and the dramatic Ormiston Gorge. Palm Valley in Finke Gorge National Park — accessible by 4WD only — contains ancient Livistona palms found nowhere else in Central Australia. Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta are 450 km southwest, requiring either a fly-drive combination or an overnight stay.
