Alice Springs itself is small enough to walk around the centre in 20 minutes. To reach the Desert Park, Telegraph Station, and Araluen Precinct — all several kilometres from the mall — a hire car or taxi is useful. The Palm Valley and West MacDonnell Ranges day trips require a 4WD hire vehicle. Tour operators in town run half-day and full-day trips to all the main attractions outside town, which avoids the need to hire a vehicle. The Ghan railway runs north to Darwin and south to Adelaide.
