Field of Light

Bruce Munro's 50,000-stem solar light installation

Bruce Munro's "Field of Light" installation covers roughly 49,000 square metres of open desert with more than 50,000 frosted-glass stems powered by solar panels. As the sun goes down they flicker on, drifting slowly through pale gold, pink, red and purple, with Uluru looming as a silhouette behind. It is, in good conditions, one of the most memorable things to see at the park.

Access is by booked-tour shuttle from Yulara; the basic "Star Pass" gets you a glass of sparkling on arrival and an hour in the field, with longer dinner packages also available. Numbers are capped each night so book ahead, especially in school holidays.

A story
The artist Bruce Munro first imagined the installation while camping at Uluru in 1992. It opened in 2016 as a temporary work, but proved so popular that it has been extended again and again and is now effectively permanent, with the field of glowing stems sometimes visible from the air as planes come in to Connellan Airport.
