Mutitjulu, on the south-eastern side of Uluru, is one of the few permanent waterholes in the area and a key reason the Anangu have lived around the rock for so long. A short, mostly shaded walk (1 km return) from the Kuniya car park leads to the pool, passing rock-art shelters along the way.
The Anangu associate the waterhole with the Tjukurpa story of Kuniya, the python woman, and Liru, the venomous snake man — figures whose fight is visible in the patterns and scars of the surrounding cliffs. A ranger-led "Kuniya walk" is offered most mornings free of charge and is highly recommended.
