Valley of the Winds

Best hike in Kata Tjuta, looping between the domes

The Valley of the Winds is a 7.4 km loop that weaves through the heart of Kata Tjuta, climbing two saddles between the domes and crossing a wide central valley. There are two lookouts — Karu and Karingana — with the latter offering one of the great views in the desert: a panorama down a valley framed by orange-red walls.

Allow three to four hours, start before sunrise in summer, and carry at least a litre of water per hour. Rangers close the second half of the loop when forecast temperatures exceed 36 degrees; the short out-and-back to Karu lookout (2.2 km return) remains open and is itself well worth doing.
